The incident caused significant traffic disruption and once again highlighted the risks faced by heavy-duty truck operators on steep highway corridors.
According to initial reports, the crash occurred when the truck lost control while traveling along the M13 route, a major road connecting Durban and Pietermaritzburg in the province of KwaZulu‑Natal.
The vehicle reportedly left the roadway and collided with roadside structures, leaving the cabin severely damaged and trapping the driver inside.
Authorities believe the driver may have lost control of the vehicle while navigating the steep Fields Hill descent, a section of the highway known for frequent heavy-vehicle accidents.
Investigations are ongoing to determine whether mechanical failure, brake overheating, or driver fatigue contributed to the crash.
Emergency teams responded quickly after receiving distress calls from motorists who witnessed the crash.
Rescue personnel used specialized extrication equipment to carefully cut through the mangled metal of the truck’s cabin to reach the trapped driver.
After a delicate rescue operation, the driver was successfully freed and immediately transported to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation and treatment.
Officials reported that the driver sustained injuries but remained conscious during the rescue.
The crash led to major congestion along the M13 corridor as emergency services closed sections of the highway to allow rescue and recovery operations.
Traffic authorities diverted vehicles to alternative routes while towing teams worked to remove the damaged truck from the roadway.
Motorists were advised to exercise caution while traveling through the area.
Fields Hill: A Known Accident Hotspot
The Fields Hill stretch of the M13 highway has long been identified as one of South Africa’s most dangerous routes for heavy trucks.
Due to its steep gradient and heavy freight traffic, the corridor has recorded several serious crashes involving large commercial vehicles over the years.
Road safety experts warn that heavy trucks descending long slopes face significant risks such as:
- brake failure due to overheating
- excessive speed on downhill gradients
- driver fatigue during long-distance transport
- overloaded cargo affecting vehicle stability.
Authorities have previously introduced additional safety measures on the route, including runaway truck ramps, warning signage, and speed monitoring, to reduce accidents involving heavy vehicles.
Transport safety analysts say the latest incident reinforces the need for stronger compliance among freight operators.
Experts recommend that trucking companies ensure:
- regular brake system inspections,
- strict load management,
- proper driver training for mountain and downhill routes,
- and adequate rest schedules for long-distance drivers.
Improving these safety practices could significantly reduce the number of truck-related crashes on steep highways.
Local authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Officials will examine the truck’s mechanical condition, driver records, and road conditions at the time of the crash.
The findings could help identify further safety improvements needed to prevent similar incidents on the M13 highway.
