Authorities confirmed that both crashes occurred on the same stretch of highway but involved different vehicles and circumstances.
First Crash: Commercial Vehicle Collides with Trailer
According to reports, the first accident occurred when a commercial passenger vehicle collided with a livestock trailer transporting animals along the busy highway.
Eyewitnesses said the commercial vehicle reportedly ran into the rear of the slow-moving trailer, causing severe damage to the front section of the vehicle. Several passengers sustained injuries during the impact.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to rescue victims trapped in the wreckage.
Officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that the injured victims were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Second Crash Occurs Hours Later
In a separate incident along the same highway corridor, another crash occurred involving a commercial vehicle that reportedly lost control while navigating the road.
The accident resulted in one confirmed fatality, while additional passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Local residents assisted rescue teams in evacuating the victims before emergency personnel transported them to medical facilities.
Officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps and local security agencies responded to both accidents, managing traffic and coordinating rescue operations.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the precise causes of the crashes, though preliminary observations suggest that possible contributing factors may include:
- excessive speed
- poor visibility
- unsafe following distance between vehicles
- driver fatigue common among long-distance transport operators
Safety Concerns Along the Dayi–Malumfashi Corridor
The Dayi–Malumfashi road is a critical route connecting several communities and markets across Katsina State.
Due to frequent movement of heavy trucks transporting livestock, agricultural goods, and commercial passengers, the highway often experiences heavy traffic congestion.
Road safety experts note that rear-end collisions with slow-moving trucks or trailers are among the most common causes of highway crashes on Nigerian roads.
Such accidents often occur when passenger vehicles approach heavy-duty trucks at high speed without maintaining adequate braking distance.
Following the incidents, officials urged drivers operating along the highway to adhere strictly to safety regulations, emphasizing the importance of:
- maintaining safe speed limits
- avoiding reckless overtaking
- keeping adequate distance from trucks and trailers
- ensuring vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on long journeys.
Authorities also called on commercial transport operators to prioritize passenger safety and ensure drivers are properly rested before undertaking long-distance trips.
Road traffic accidents remain a leading cause of injuries and fatalities in Nigeria. Safety experts warn that many highway tragedies are preventable when drivers obey traffic rules and exercise caution while sharing the road with heavy-duty vehicles.
