Though fortunately no injuries were reported, the crash forced a temporary closure of the affected lanes, snarling morning traffic and causing major delays.
The incident occurred shortly after 6:30 a.m. local time on the northbound lanes of I‑35, just south of Highway 90.
The truck, reportedly carrying asphalt, collided with overhead road signs, which fell onto the lanes below, blocking multiple lanes and causing a temporary shutdown of the interstate.
Traffic crews and emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene to clear debris, secure the highway, and divert traffic.
Motorists faced delays of over an hour, with authorities urging commuters to use alternate routes while cleanup operations were underway.
Authorities advised drivers to:
- Avoid the area until lanes are fully cleared.
- Maintain safe following distances around large trucks.
- Be alert for debris and emergency vehicles along the roadway.
- Drive cautiously in construction and heavy traffic zones.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) confirmed that repairs to the overhead signs would begin once the site was cleared, and the truck driver is cooperating with investigators.
Collisions involving trucks and highway infrastructure often occur due to:
- Improper load height or securing
- Driver inattention or misjudgment of clearance
- Limited visibility or signage for overhead structures
Road safety experts remind drivers of oversized vehicles to always check load heights against posted clearance limits and ensure proper securing to prevent similar incidents.
