A multi-vehicle crash on the busy Admiralty Way corridor in Lekki, Lagos, triggered a vehicle fire and massive traffic gridlock on Monday, disrupting movement across one of the city’s busiest commercial districts.

The incident occurred during peak traffic hours, causing panic among motorists and pedestrians as flames engulfed one of the vehicles involved in the collision.

Preliminary reports indicate that the crash involved multiple vehicles traveling along Admiralty Way, a major road serving the Lekki Phase 1 business and residential areas.

According to traffic officials, the collision led to one of the vehicles catching fire shortly after impact, sending thick smoke into the air and forcing nearby motorists to abandon their lanes while emergency responders rushed to the scene.

Witnesses reported that the crash quickly escalated into a traffic nightmare as vehicles became trapped along the narrow corridor.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the collision, but investigations are ongoing.

Officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Lagos State Fire Service arrived at the scene shortly after the accident was reported.

Emergency responders successfully:

  • Extinguished the vehicle fire
  • Secured the accident scene
  • Managed traffic diversion to alternative routes
  • Assisted in clearing damaged vehicles from the roadway

Their swift response helped prevent the fire from spreading to nearby vehicles and buildings.

The crash resulted in heavy traffic congestion along Admiralty Way, with gridlock extending into adjoining streets including Freedom Way and other connecting routes within the Lekki axis.

Commuters traveling toward Victoria Island and other parts of Lagos experienced significant delays as authorities worked to restore traffic flow.

Traffic officers later began gradual reopening of the affected lanes after the wreckage was cleared.

Growing Concern Over Urban Traffic Collisions

Admiralty Way is one of the busiest commercial corridors in Lagos, hosting offices, banks, shopping centres, and residential estates.

Due to its high traffic volume, accidents along the road often result in widespread disruption.

Urban transport experts note that collisions in dense city corridors can quickly escalate into larger safety risks, especially when vehicles catch fire or block emergency routes.

Authorities have continued to advise motorists in Lagos to maintain safe driving speeds and keep adequate distance between vehicles to reduce the risk of multi-vehicle collisions.

Officials say investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the crash and whether factors such as reckless driving, mechanical failure, or road congestion contributed to the incident.

Authorities have also reminded drivers to remain calm during emergencies and cooperate with traffic officers managing accident scenes.
