The incident occurred during heavy traffic movement and involved several commercial buses and a truck, creating a major pile-up on one of Lagos’ most important interstate transport routes.

According to preliminary reports from traffic authorities and eyewitnesses, the accident occurred when a commercial bus reportedly lost control while navigating traffic congestion along the expressway.

The out-of-control vehicle collided with other vehicles, triggering a chain reaction crash involving multiple commercial buses and a truck.

The impact caused severe damage to several vehicles and left passengers trapped inside the wreckage.

Emergency responders and road safety officials were alerted immediately as commuters and passers-by attempted to rescue victims before the arrival of authorities.

Officials confirmed that three passengers died at the scene, while six others sustained injuries of varying severity.

Rescue operations were carried out by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), alongside officers from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and other emergency services.

The injured victims were evacuated to nearby hospitals for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at a mortuary.

Authorities also worked to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow along the busy corridor.

The crash caused severe traffic congestion along the Lagos–Abeokuta corridor, leaving thousands of commuters stranded for hours.

The expressway serves as a major route linking Lagos with neighbouring communities and Ogun State, making it one of the busiest transportation routes in southwestern Nigeria.

Traffic officials diverted vehicles to alternative routes while recovery teams removed the damaged vehicles.

Road safety experts have long warned about the high number of crashes along the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway due to factors such as:

  • speeding by commercial drivers
  • overloaded passenger vehicles
  • poor vehicle maintenance
  • aggressive driving in congested traffic conditions.

The corridor has recorded several fatal accidents in recent years, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.

Officials confirmed that an investigation has begun to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Authorities say the probe will examine possible factors including mechanical failure, driver negligence, and traffic violations.

Road safety agencies have again urged motorists to maintain safe speeds and follow traffic regulations to prevent avoidable highway tragedies.
