The fatal crash occurred on Wednesday morning around the Magboro corridor of the expressway, a major highway connecting Lagos with several southwestern and northern parts of Nigeria.
Eyewitnesses at the scene said the victim was attempting to cross the highway when he was struck by a fast-moving Toyota Sienna vehicle traveling at high speed.
According to a witness identified as Grace, the impact from the vehicle was so severe that the pedestrian was thrown into the air before another vehicle behind, reportedly a commercial bus ran over him.
The pedestrian died instantly from the injuries sustained in the collision.
Grace explained that the driver of the vehicle that initially hit the victim did not stop after the crash but instead sped away from the scene, leaving the victim lying on the expressway.
Another witness, Anas, said residents and commuters nearby attempted to move the body away from the road to prevent further damage from passing vehicles.
However, witnesses claimed the body remained unattended for several hours before authorities arrived. They also alleged that emergency responders and law-enforcement vehicles passed the area without immediately stopping to intervene.
Crowds gathered around the scene shortly after the accident.
Residents said identifying the victim proved difficult because his personal belongings were missing.
One witness, Ore, stated that the victim’s phone and wallet were allegedly taken by unknown individuals who gathered at the accident scene shortly after the crash.
As a result, authorities initially had no immediate means of identifying the deceased or contacting family members.
When contacted about the incident, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Babaseyi Oluseyi, confirmed that the police had been notified and were taking steps to evacuate the body from the scene.
Investigations are expected to begin to identify the driver responsible for the crash.
The Lagos–Ibadan Expressway is one of Nigeria’s busiest highways, carrying thousands of vehicles daily between Lagos and other parts of the country.
Despite recent rehabilitation works on sections of the road, the corridor continues to witness frequent crashes, pedestrian deaths, and hit-and-run incidents, often linked to:
- speeding vehicles
- pedestrians crossing multi-lane highways without pedestrian bridges
- poor driver discipline
- inadequate enforcement in some areas.
Road safety advocates have repeatedly called for the construction of additional pedestrian bridges and stricter enforcement against reckless driving along the highway.
