The incident occurred during the morning rush hour on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, a major interstate route connecting Lagos with several southwestern states.

According to eyewitness reports, the truck reportedly lost balance while navigating the slope leading onto the bridge before overturning across part of the roadway.

The vehicle fell sideways, partially blocking traffic lanes and forcing many motorists to slow down or divert to alternative routes.

Drivers and commuters in the area described the scene as chaotic as traffic quickly built up behind the accident site.

Some motorists reportedly abandoned their vehicles temporarily while others attempted to navigate through nearby service lanes to avoid the congestion.

Officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and the Federal Road Safety Corps responded swiftly to the scene.

Traffic officers immediately began:

  • Diverting vehicles away from the crash location
  • Managing traffic flow to prevent secondary collisions
  • Coordinating removal of the overturned truck
  • Ensuring safety around the accident scene

Emergency teams worked for several hours to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic movement along the busy corridor.

The overturned truck caused a long queue of vehicles stretching several kilometres along the expressway.

Commuters traveling between Lagos mainland and the Berger–Ojodu corridor reported delays lasting several hours as authorities struggled to manage the massive traffic volume.

Public transportation vehicles, private cars, and commercial trucks were all affected by the congestion.

History of Accidents on Otedola Bridge

The Otedola Bridge axis has become notorious for frequent road accidents, particularly involving heavy-duty trucks and petroleum tankers.

Transportation experts attribute the repeated crashes in the area to several factors, including:

  • Steep road gradient approaching the bridge
  • Speeding by heavy-duty vehicles
  • Mechanical failure of trucks
  • Overloaded cargo vehicles

In recent years, the corridor has witnessed several high-profile tanker fires and truck crashes that resulted in major traffic disruptions and safety concerns.

Safety Concerns for Heavy-Duty Vehicles

Road safety analysts warn that incidents involving large trucks and fuel tankers on busy highways pose significant risks to motorists due to their size, cargo weight, and potential for catastrophic damage if accidents occur.

Authorities have repeatedly called on transport companies and truck drivers to ensure:

  • Proper vehicle maintenance
  • Strict compliance with speed regulations
  • Adequate driver training
  • Observance of road safety guidelines
  • Investigation Ongoing

Officials say investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the crash, including whether mechanical failure, driver error, or excessive speed contributed to the incident.

Meanwhile, traffic authorities have advised motorists to remain patient and follow traffic directives whenever accidents occur along major highways.
