The incident, which occurred during a busy traffic period, involved a fire truck belonging to the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), an Access-A-Ride transport van, and several private vehicles.

Authorities confirmed that the crash triggered a multi-vehicle pile-up that caused significant injuries and disrupted traffic across the area.

Preliminary reports indicate that the collision began when a van traveling along the roadway collided with the responding fire truck.

The impact caused the emergency vehicle to lose control and crash into additional vehicles nearby.

The crash quickly escalated into a chain-reaction collision, involving multiple vehicles including:

  • an Access-A-Ride passenger van
  • a Lexus SUV
  • the FDNY fire truck
  • another commercial vehicle

Emergency responders were immediately dispatched to the scene as debris scattered across the roadway and several passengers required urgent medical attention.

Officials confirmed that a 78-year-old passenger who was inside the Access-A-Ride van later died from injuries sustained during the crash.

In addition to the fatality:

  • At least 11 people were injured, including firefighters and passengers.
  • Several victims were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
  • Some firefighters suffered minor injuries while responding to the emergency.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased victim pending notification of family members.

Multiple emergency agencies responded to the crash scene, including:

  • the **New York City Fire Department
  • the **New York City Police Department
  • city emergency medical services

Paramedics treated victims at the scene while police officers secured the crash area and diverted traffic away from the accident site.

Officials described the rescue operation as complex due to the number of vehicles involved and the presence of injured passengers.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. Investigators are reviewing several possible contributing factors, including:

  • vehicle speed
  • right-of-way conditions
  • visibility and traffic signals
  • possible driver error

Police are also examining surveillance footage and speaking with witnesses who were present during the incident.

Crashes involving emergency vehicles responding to incidents are relatively rare but can be particularly dangerous due to the speed and urgency required during response operations.

Safety experts say such incidents highlight the need for motorists to remain alert and give way to emergency vehicles displaying lights and sirens.

The accident caused temporary road closures and severe traffic congestion in parts of Brooklyn as authorities worked to remove damaged vehicles and clear debris from the roadway.

Traffic flow was gradually restored once emergency crews completed rescue and investigation procedures.
