Rollover Crash Closes Southbound I‑280 Entrance Ramp in Toledo

A single‑vehicle rollover crash early Tuesday morning led to the temporary closure of a southbound entrance ramp on Interstate 280 in north Toledo, authorities confirmed.

The incident left the driver injured and prompted emergency responders to block the ramp for several hours while debris was cleared and the scene was made safe for motorists.
The crash occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday, 24 February 2026, when an SUV lost control on the southbound I‑280 entrance ramp near Shoreland Avenue in north Toledo. The vehicle overturned, ultimately resting on its side off the roadway.
Emergency crews from Toledo Fire & Rescue and Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) responded promptly, stabilising the scene and checking the condition of the driver before transporting them to a nearby hospital for treatment of non‑life‑threatening injuries.
No other vehicles were involved in the collision, and no additional injuries were reported.
The OSHP confirmed that the entrance ramp was closed for nearly four hours while responders removed the damaged SUV, cleared shattered glass and debris, and conducted an initial assessment of the roadway.
The ramp was later fully reopened to traffic before mid‑morning as conditions returned to normal.
Investigation and Preliminary Findings
Early reports from state patrol investigators suggest that loss of control at speed, possibly combined with wet pavement or vehicle dynamics, contributed to the rollover.
No indication of impairment or other criminal factors has been announced at this time.
The OSHP said its collision reconstruction team would review speed, vehicle weight, steering input, and road conditions as part of the ongoing investigation, with final conclusions expected in the coming days.
Rollover crashes like this are common on entrance and exit ramps where changes in steering angle and lane geometry can destabilise tall, top‑heavy vehicles such as SUVs and vans if drivers are travelling too fast for the conditions.
Traffic Impact and Motorist Advisory
The ramp closure disrupted typical morning flows into I‑280 southbound, a major commuter route linking Toledo with suburban communities and the Ohio Turnpike.
Drivers were advised to use alternate access points or local surface streets to reach their destinations while the crash scene was cleared.
Ohio State Highway Patrol Sergeant Marcus Fields reminded motorists that:
“Entrance and exit ramps require reduced speeds and careful steering input, especially at night or in early morning hours when visibility may be limited. Adjust your speed to the conditions, even when the ramp looks clear.”
Why Rollover Crashes Happen on Ramps
Rollover collisions, especially on curved entrance ramps, occur most frequently due to:
- Excessive speed entering a curve
- Loss of traction from wet or slick pavement
- Steering inputs that unbalance the vehicle’s centre of gravity
- High‑centred vehicles (SUVs, vans, trucks) tipping at sharp angles
Traffic safety experts advise drivers to slow well below posted ramp speeds, avoid sudden steering corrections, and maintain both hands on the wheel while navigating curves.
