Nigeria Gov’t Bans Large Tanker Trucks Amid Rising Fatalities

The Nigerian government is considering prohibiting 60,000-litre tankers from federal highways due to the growing number of fatal accidents involving petroleum trucks.
To enhance road safety, officials propose limiting tanker capacity to 45,000 litres. This measure follows reports of 493 deaths linked to tanker accidents between 2022 and 2025.

However, stakeholders, including the National Association of Road Transport Owners, oppose the move, arguing that improved road infrastructure, rather than a ban, would be a more effective solution, given the substantial investments in large-capacity trucks.
